Radiation Sterilization and Conservation

The Radiation unit, Gamma sterilization facility in Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences is one of over 200 gamma irradiators operating worldwide.

Gamma irradiation is used for a variety of products: syringes, surgical gloves, gowns, masks, sticking plasters, dressings, ‘tetrapacks’, bottle teats for premature babies, artificial joints, food packaging, raw materials for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, and even wine corks are gamma sterilized.

The gamma sterilization process in Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences uses Cobalt 60 radiation to kill microorganisms on a variety of different products. Processing with gamma rays yields quick turnaround time, easily penetrating packaging and product and is cost-effective

Cable testing and certification

Laboratory "Gamma" became an authorized organization for testing insulated conductors and cables since January1984, according to the Order on mandatory certification of cables for installations and appliances ("Službeni list SFRJ", No 62/83). Since then, Laboratory "Gamma" has regularly adapted its test methods to appropriate changes in national standards.

Until now the Laboratory has issued about 500 certificates and more than 1600 test reports. The Laboratory “Gamma” has established diverse collaboration with the Accreditation Body of Serbia, with the Institute for Standardization of Serbia and with testing laboratories and certification bodies in Serbia and abroad.

The collaboration includes participation in corresponding proficiency testing programs, work in the technical committees of the Institute for Standardization of Serbia, joint projects, development and exchange of test methods, inter laboratory comparison testing, etc. The Laboratory takes part in the activities of the Committee of Testing Laboratories (CTL) and its expert task forces (CTLETF) within the international IECEE CB-scheme.

Serbian accreditation body (ATS) confirmed by an accreditation certificate that Laboratory "Gamma" meets the requirements of SRPS ISO/IEC 17025:2006. By decision of the Management Committee (MC), on the recommendation of the Committee of Certification Bodies (CCB) of the IECEE CB Scheme, the Laboratory "Gamma" is recognized as a CB laboratory for testing of insulated cables and cords,in accordance with the rules of this certification scheme of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
